In Stolberg/Harz, the only town in Germany under complete monument protection, the association Fachwerkstadt Stolberg (er)leben e.V. sees great potential in the Albergo Diffuso concept to address challenges such as the shortage of skilled workers, population decline, and vacant buildings. Local entrepreneurs reached out to the Tourismusverband Sachsen-Anhalt e. V. and the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) Saxony-Anhalt.
A meeting was quickly arranged to explore how both institutions could support the Stolberg-based companies. It soon became clear that direct contact with experienced stakeholders was essential. Many questions—ranging from legal frameworks and local integration to marketing strategies—remained open.
Thanks to its global network, the Enterprise Europe Network Saxony-Anhalt swiftly received support from the Turin Chamber of Commerce, a partner within the EEN Piemonte in northern Italy, and from the Swiss branch of the EEN, managed by Switzerland Global Enterprise.
Through close cooperation with both EEN partners in Italy and Switzerland, EEN Saxony-Anhalt organized a so-called Company Mission for the Stolberg entrepreneurs. This term refers to a study visit from companies for companies, focused on sharing knowledge and exchanging practical experience.
From 15 to 19 October, the delegation from Saxony-Anhalt travelled to Baveno, Italy, where they were welcomed at the local Chamber of Commerce. The visit focused on the theoretical foundations of the tourism concept and an exchange with tourism organizations. Afterwards, the group visited tourism businesses that have already successfully implemented the Albergo Diffuso model.
On their way back to Germany, the delegation also met with the Fondazione Corippo 1975, which runs an Albergo Diffuso in Corippo—the smallest village in Switzerland.
The Stolberg association will now follow up on the Company Mission together with the Tourismusverband Sachsen-Anhalt e. V. and EEN Saxony-Anhalt to define the next steps. The Enterprise Europe Network Saxony-Anhalt will continue to support the further development of the initiative and facilitate ongoing dialogue between the association and stakeholders in Italy and Switzerland.
Background: Albergo Diffuso
The concept of Albergo Diffuso originated in Italy. It revitalizes remote areas by converting vacant buildings into a decentralized hotel. Guests stay in different houses throughout a village or small town, while reception and dining services are centrally managed. This approach preserves local life and integrates tourism into the community. Moreover, Albergo Diffuso represents a model of sustainable tourism.
